September 30, 2007: Edinborough Park
The last Saturday and Sunday in September usually marks a change in seasons for The First John Philip Sousa Memorial Band.
On Saturday evening the band plays their only non-free concert of the year at the historic Sheldon Theatre in Red Wing, Minnesota. Unfortunately, Sheri and I weren't able to attend this concert this year. The program for this concert features a number of songs that the band has played over the Summer season.
Sunday night starts the "Indoor" or "Winter" season of concerts at Edinborough Park (an indoor park) in Edina, Minnesota. Here you'll find the band on the last Sunday of the month from September through May (except December). Every program is different and several have themes, spookly in October, marches in, when else?, March, the band's favorites in May.
The band was "up" for this concert. I'm sure you'll enjoy these recordings:
- Untitled March, Sousa
- Galop Burlesk, Rhodes
- Come Back to Sorrento, arr. Nestico
- Five Foot Two, arr. Moss
- Thus Do You Fare My Jesus, Bach / arr. Reed
- Annie Laurie, Pryor , featuring John Sparr, euphonium
- Under the Rose, Blanke
- Frank & King's Comedians, Hill
- Toccatarentella, Washburn
- Scallawag, Grofe
- The President's March, Fillmore
- Saxophonia, Bulla , featuring the saxophone section
- American Overture for Band, Jenkins , featuring the french horn section
- Playfellow, Fillmore (paper airplane song)
- The Stars and Stripes Forever, Sousa
